An inspiration session will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Ave., Rochester, for those interested in participating in the 2017 Fast Forward Film Festival.
Submissions will be accepted through Feb. 27, 2017 for the 2017 festival.
The festival invites novice/amateur and professional filmmakers from the Rochester and Finger Lakes region to submit short films that are five minutes or less. Submissions are open to all ages. There is no entry fee, and winners are awarded cash prizes.
Select films will screen at the Little Theatre, 240 East Ave., Rochester, and the Dryden Theater at the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Ave., Rochester.
“We encourage films that tap into the local experience and compel audiences to engage with the community while raising environmental awareness,” said Andrew Stern, founder of the festival. “Embracing the short-film format, the festival challenges filmmakers to utilize the power of visual storytelling to convey the urgency of environmental issues.”
Over the past two years, the festival has received close to 250 qualifying films from the Rochester community on topics including beekeeping, composting, sustainable living, pollution, extinction and waste.
The festival will also showcase over 30 organizations as Friends of the Festival — a network of local Rochester organizations offering advice and resources to filmmakers.
The festival received a grant from the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute to develop a youth “green story” guide. The guide encourages educators to include the project in curriculum and youth group organizers to include the project in programming to increase awareness of environmental concerns and filmmaking.
Awards will be given to the top-three selected films in the adult and youth programs. All awards will be presented at the festival’s gala event during Earth Week 2017.
Adult program awards: three winners will each receive $1,000; the Audience Choice Award recipient will receive $500.
Youth program awards: three winners will each receive $500; the Audience Choice Award recipient will receive $250.
Entries must be submitted via the FilmFreeway.com by 8 p.m. Feb. 27, 2017.
